Mhalsapathy was a goldsmith by caste and profession. He was an uneducated young man. Khandoba was his family diety. With his own money he had built a temple for Khandoba at Shirdi. He led a life of poverty but always remained contented, with implicit faith in God. He was possessed with the spirit of Khandoba and when he was in a trance, he solved many problems of the villagers. He was detached to worldly pleasures. This led him on to spiritual path and made him highly respected by the villagers.
