Somewhere around 1854 in the village of Shirdi people saw a young lad sitting under the Neem tree, His state at this point of time was “Wearing torn and tattered clothes; Sitting wherever it pleased; Appearing as a mad person however absorbed in Brahma! Sometimes, the lad would go and sit at the stream; sometimes underneath a particular margosa tree near the village wall; sometimes in somebody’s farm; the clothes on His body were tattered; on and off He put on a ferocious appearance. He appeared to the ordinary persons as mad, because of these and similar modes of behavior. But soon, people’s erroneous misconception was removed and people of Shirdi realized the worth of this young lad”. Nana Chopdar’s mother was the first person who noticed Sai doing meditation not minding heat or cold. She would often talk about the marvel of Baba’s ways and his behavior. Villagers heard about this lad and they were simply amused to see him. He neither associated with any at daytime nor was scared of any during night. The news spread to the neighboring villages also. People rushed to Shirdi to have his darshan. ‘Where this lad could have come from?’ was the one question that puzzled everyone’s mind.
